If one is Pentecostal, why is it a sin to cut their own hair?

I have some friends at my school who have never cut their hair before. They say that at their church it is considered a sin. Why? Where in the Bible does it say that cutting your hair is a sin?

Hi! Most respondents are not answering your question. Instead of giving you a substantive answer, they proceed to tell you what they believe and ignore your question altogether.

The critical verses are:

I Corinthians 11

14. Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15. But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

As opposed to what another respondent said, this passage is *not* merely directed to the Corinthian church. Verse 14 tells us that this is the teaching of NATURE, not local Corinthian custom.

In short, the passage (vss. 1-16) teaches that hair symbolizes the submission to the authority God has established in our lives (see verse 3 for elaboration). If hair symbolizes our submission to authority, then a woman shortening her hair in any manner symbolizes a "shortening" of her submission which symbolizes rebellion.

Christ said, "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh;" and the Apostle Paul said, "...glorify God in your *body* and in your *spirit* which are God's." Serving God is both inward and outward:

II Corinthians 7

1. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

External New Testament symbolism is also shown in Communion where the bread and the wine symbolize the Body and Blood of Christ. These "landmarks" are evidently very important to God and the conscientious Christian would do well to observe them.

Below is a link which analyzes I Corinthians 11 in a scholarly manner.

If you'd like to discuss it further, feel free to email me.

Best wishes,

its just a group ritual, most christian religions are loosly tied with some form of the ot and nt but im glad they are not 100% tied to it becuase the book is awfull, im glad the people ignore some of it, i think its about time we throw it out, i mean beleive in god if you will, why do you need a book and a human savior?

I am Assembly of God (pentecostal) and no it is not a sin to cut their own hair..You must be talking about the "Oneness Pentecostals"

Assembly of God Pentecostals do not believe that.

Go to this web site for what Assembly of God believes.

I am pentecostal and I cut my hair hmmm maybe it's a different type , or it's their doctrine. The Nazerite vow they couldn't cut their hair but that's the only thing I can recall oh and Sampson.

Its not a sin, some just like to beat dead horses. God will judge the heart, not the hair.

It is not a sin to cut your hair. That is a legalistic view from 1 Corinthians 11:15. Long hair was to be the glory for women as their covering. It had to do with the Corinthian people--the pagans were known to cut their hair and adorn their hair and those who were following Christ were to set themselves apart and not be a temptation to men. If one is to take the New Testament as to what it is--we no longer live under the law, we live under grace. Lots of Christians still today, even though they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior put themselves back intot he bondage of the law and try to follow rules and do right works to earn their place into heaven. That is not what Christ came to earth and became the once for all sacrifice for. He came to set us free--from sin and the law of religion.

You are thinking of United Pentecostal or Apostolic. The bible says that a woman's hair is her glory, it doesn't say how long it has to be. I think well cared for hair would get the split ends cut off from time to time, but not them.

If one is Pentecostal, why is it a sin to cut their own hair?

I notice the question is why is it a sin to cut your own hair? What stands out is own hair. The bible says that we are not our own we were bought with a price.Jesus paid a high price for us. Now the bible says, your hair is your glory meaning your beauty. Long hair symbolize beauty or means beauty.

I Corinthians 11:14 %26amp;15. Whether a person is pentecostal, apostolic, bapitise, assemble of God or whatever we are.We should all be obeying the scripture. We have to realize what the law was and what being under grace is. Yes, we are under grace but that doesn't give us an excuse to not obey God's Word. Also, under the law there was no power given but under grace we have power (The Holy Ghost) to live up to the standards of God.

Just one of the old testament's weird things. Some churches still preach from the old testament just to keep order. In VA many women of the baptist churches let their hair grow for 3-5 years then donate it to the Locks of Love Foundation.
