you should go somewhere and just ask for a 1/4 to 1/2 inch trim - you will barely notice the difference and your hair will look longer in about a month. don't try to cut layers yourself though - you'll either chop it up or make it worse.

If you dont your split ends will move further up the hair shaft and eventually will break off.

Let her come with you so that she can supervise the hair cut and make sure that they don't take to much off. The split is only on the ends of your hair and you will only need a trim on the ends. Maybe she will agree to this.
